As a heterofermentative lactic acid bacterium, it produces not only lactic acid during metabolism, but also acetic acid, ethanol and carbon dioxide. It is widely found in the oral cavity, intestinal tract and vagina of humans and animals, and serves as an important strain in many fermented foods.
