S-Adenosylmethionine (SAM) is an organic compound synthesized from methionine and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) under the catalysis of methionine adenosyltransferase. Its CAS number is 485-80-3, with molecular formula and molecular weight of 399.445.
As the biologically active form of methionine, SAM naturally occurs in animals and plants and serves as a coenzyme for over 100 methyltransferases. It is clinically used for adjunctive treatment of liver diseases, depression and osteoarthritis.
